Catherine Mazzone

Internationally renowned Dramatic Soprano Catherine Mazzone, is one of the most innovative and creative teachers of voice today. Studies that began in Glasgow, Scotland, at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, have taken her all over the world performing and teaching, culminating her studies at the Juilliard Opera Center, New York.
Catherine’s vocal pedagogical lineage can be traced to Ettore Campogalliani (teacher of legendary singers Renata Tebaldi, Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni, and Ferruccio Furlanetto). In New York, Catherine had the opportunity to study with American voice teacher, Beverley Johnson, whose pupils included Giorgio Tozzi and Anna Moffo. She worked with Dame Joan Sutherland, Marilyn Horne, Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Christa Ludwig, Dame Sarah Walker, Dame Janet Baker, Régine Crespin, Regina Resnik, and has performed with Jane Eaglen. Catherine taught masterclasses at Festa Canzone, the first art song festival in Singapore. As faculty at the Mannes School of Music Extension Division for five years, Catherine helped develop a program for young singers wishing to pursue a career in singing. She maintains an active vocal studio in New York City and since 2018, has served on the adjunct voice faculty of Columbia University. She is the vocal consultant to Bamberger Artists Management and to Orchestra dell’opera di Parma, revently for a production of La Traviata. She has been invited to Buenos Aires to teach lessons and masterclasses at the Teatro Cólon in 2022. Among many other venues, Catherine’s students have been heard at The Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall, New York City Opera, Sarasota Opera, Royal Albert Hall, Teatro Massimo Bellini, Utah Opera Festival, Seoul National Opera, Caramoor Opera Festival, New Jersey Opera, Knoxville Opera, Pacific Opera, Broadway, The West End, Metropolitan Room, Blues Alley, Bogotá and Paris Jazz Festivals, as well as television and radio appearances. Professionally, Catherine has performed many great roles of the soprano repertoire, spanning opera, oratorio, and art song. Roles include: Agathe (Der Freischütz) in Zwingenberg Schlossfestspiele; Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Giorgetta (Il Tabarro) in Aspen Music Festival; Isaure (Jérusalem) with Opera Orchestra of New York; Medora (Il Corsaro) at Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Alice (Falstaff), Leonora (Oberto) and Sandmännchen (Hänsel und Gretel) at Sarasota Opera; Clotilde (Norma), Glaša (Káťa Kabanová), Mrs. Páskova (The Cunning Little Vixen), and High Priestess (Aida) with Scottish Opera. Concert solo appearances include Verdi Requiem, Rossini Stabat Mater, Beethoven Mass in C and the Ninth Symphony, Händel Messiah, Mendelssohn Elijah and St. Paul, and Mozart Requiem. In recital, Catherine has performed at Alice Tully Hall New York, Tilles Center, Tannery Pond New York, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Usdan Center New York, Waterbury Symphony, and Bear Mountain. |
